Serious assault in Tennant Creek

A 26-year-old man has been arrested following an assault in Tennant Creek which has left a man in hospital.  Police received a report just before 9pm last night that a 48-year-old man had been assaulted in a pizza parlour. The victim was taken to Tennant Creek Hospital and later medivaced to Alice Springs with serious head injuries.   
Police arrested the alleged offender in Paterson Street a short time after the assault. He is in police custody and is yet to be interviewed.  Meanwhile the victim remains in the Intensive Care Unit of the Alice Springs Hospital in a serious but stable condition and police investigations are continuing. 


Operation Southern Lockdown

Hundreds of cars were stopped and liquor and drugs were seized during Operation Southern Lockdown.  The two-day campaign involved members of the Substance Abuse Intelligence Desk, the Drug Intelligence Unit, Dog Operations Unit and Remote Community Drug Desk., and saw cars pulled over at roadblocks throughout Central Australia.   
Detective Senior Constable Adam Van Oosten of the Substance Abuse Intelligence Desk said police pulled over 386 cars during the two day operation on July 29 and 30.   
Police also searched 32 vehicles and 63 people, while seven people were issued with traffic infringement notices, three were issued with drug infringement notices and five were arrested. Police also seized 61.25 litres of alcohol, a traffickable quantity of cannabis and a quantity of MDMA tablets during the operation.   
“The operation came at the end of Operation Hyde which was a two-week operation targeting the illegal trafficking and use of drugs in Central Australia,” Det S/C Van Oosten said.   
“We will continue to target the trafficking and use of illicit drugs in the community. We would also like to thank those members of the public who assisted us during the campaign by providing information on the supply of drugs in Central Australia.”


Assault & robbery at McDonalds

Police are investigating a robbery which occurred at McDonalds take-away in Alice Springs Tuesday afternoon.  Police received a report just after 1.30pm that a man had been assaulted and a car had its windows smashed by a woman wielding an iron bar.  The 16-year-old female driver of the vehicle told police she was travelling through the drive-through at McDonalds when a woman approached her car and smashed the passenger side window with an iron bar. The 18-year-old male passenger was also hit around the legs by the woman before he managed to get out of the car and run across the road to phone police.   
Meanwhile the woman continued hitting the car with the iron bar, breaking the back window. The female driver and a 12-year-old girl who was the rear passenger, left the vehicle and ran into McDonalds for help. The offender then allegedly rummaged through the car taking a wallet containing $20, a hat and the car keys before leaving in a small blue hatchback. The male victim told police from what the offender was saying it appeared she had mistaken him for someone else as the occupants of the vehicle did not know her.   
The offender is described as being of Aboriginal appearance, around 30 years old of a medium build and wearing a long-sleeved purple shirt.  Police are appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward.  Anyone with information should phone police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.  


Drink Driving arrests

Four people were arrested after being caught drink driving in town Wednesday night. The highest reading was that of a 38-year-old man who was caught driving along Sadadeen Road just after 2am with a reading of .181%. He was also found to be a disqualified driver. Police also arrested a 28-year-old man for drink driving after he was caught driving along Bradshaw Drive just before 4am with a blood alcohol level of .154 per cent. A 24-year-old man who was caught on Gregory Terrace just before 2am yesterday morning was found to have a reading .149 percent. and a 31-year-old woman will face court after she was found to be an unlicensed driver with a level of .03 per cent. She was arrested in Mahomed Street  just before 4pm Wednesday.


Man arrested for vandalism

A 27-year-old man was arrested Wednesday after a finger print match identified him in relation to the vandalism and stealing from six cars in the Golf Course area in March. He will appear in court at a later date. Police also arrested a teenager in relation to the attempted stealing of a car from an Ellery Drive premises. Police allege on June 22 the youth and four co-offenders smashed the window of a Ford F100 and  attempted to steal the vehicle. The four co-offenders were arrested the same night and have been dealt with. The 17-year-old has been charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle, stealing and criminal damage. He has been bailed to appear in the Youth Justice Court on September 2.


Operation Hyde

Police have executed 15 search warrants since the beginning of a two week drug campaign called Operation Hyde. As part of the operative they also ran a two-day Dob in a Druggie campaign which resulted in a number of calls with information about the supply and trafficking of drugs. Detective Senior Sergeant Lauren Hill says during the two weeks police seized just under 2 & a half kgs of Cannabis, a quantity of Ecstasy, seven Cannabis plants and seeds,  and 15.5 grams of an as-yet unidentified white powder. Five people will appear in court on various drug and firearms-related charges, and a further seven have been issued with drug infringement notices.
